Save Money on Utility Bills

I’m sure most of you have seen your utility bills go up. It’s most likely freezing where you live, but I also do know that for some of you it is warming up and you are outside swimming! Either way, your electricity and gas bills gave with gone way up or way down most likely.

Our heat bill usually is around $150, but so far this winter it has been around $100. When we had a rental house years ago, our heat bills were around $400 a month, and that was for a house less than 800 square feet (it was SUPER tiny). It was exceedingly high at the first place we lived at because of poor insulation, but we have also done many things to lower our utility bills.

There are many things that you can do in order to lower your utility bills:

1.Turns off the lights

Yes, this seems like it’d be easy. However I know of so many people who leave all the lights on and everything plugged in all the time. Turn off the lights when you leave the house, unplug things such as phone charges and TVs when you leave and so on. We don’t unplug everything, but I do make sure to unplug my cell phone and laptop chargers, and also to turn off most of the lights in the house.

2. Check your facets and bathrooms

The other day we had a friend who is plumber come over and he informed us that our toilet was constantly running and he wouldn’t be surprised if our water bills were extremely high. He fixed it and we have already noticed a difference. I then realized that must be high our water bill has been triple what it is usually is in the past couple of hours. He then fixed our toilet and we should be saying around $100 every water bill.

You also want to check facets and make sure that there are no leaks. You’d be surprised to learn how much water is wasted when you have a small sink water leak.

3. Lower the temperature

You might think you can’t have it any colder or hotter in your house, but try. Changing your thermostat from 73 degrees to 70 degrees in the winter time can most likely save you a decent amount of money, and you most likely won’t feel too much of a difference.

Also, when you leave for work, try lowering temperature. We do this almost everyday. We will lower it by 2 degrees when we’re gone since we will all be gone for at least 8 hours.

4. Compare prices

If you live in an area where you can choose who your utility companies will be, then search around for the best utility prices. There are many companies out there where you can compare the different companies and their prices. iSelect is a handy online based energy comparison tool if you are living in Australia.
